October 2nd UPDATE:

On Sundays I like to go to the Canal Front & Riverwalk for a longer run. I just started this 4 weeks ago, and it took me 64 minutes to go 5.42 miles on September 4th. I went yesterday and was able to cover the same distance 10 minutes faster! It was also the first time that I actually enjoyed running (not just getting through it to get it off my “To Do” list). I pushed myself to go a little faster, didn’t have any negative self-talk, and legit, I sang and/or rapped through the entire thing…sometimes out loud. Shout out to everyone who didn’t laugh at me yesterday. I was having a good time, and it made a difference in how I felt during and after.

I started running January 2, 2015, after googling “running for beginners,” there I was on the treadmill doing intervals of 4 minute walk, 1 minute run… for 45-60 minutes. I ran my first 5k on January 31, 2015 (Special Olympics Run to the Plunge) and came in about 35 minutes, but signed up for one 5k a month to keep me motivated. The first time I got under 30 minutes was my September ’15 run, just before my 30th birthday! Since then, I’ve volunteered for Girls on the Run (miss all my girls!), and continue to run 3-4 miles a pop a few times a week. There is nothing that has made me feel clearer, calmer, or more balanced than running.

Running is hard. I’m still learning to push myself, to not give up, and to overcome the whiny voice in my head that is telling me I’m tired and that I can just walk. And this is why running is so great. It’s just you…against you. Your body is the only equipment. I can tell you a few things that have made a huge difference: good running shoes (I prefer Brooks), my Beats wireless headphones, my armband for my phone, a go-to playlist, and good workout gear (Shock Absorber sports bras have been a life changer for me, ladies, but I’m also talking about tanks & shorts/pants that you don’t have to constantly adjust…find what works for you & share it with me!).

Because I like a chance to challenge myself, I signed up for my first 10K…yikes!I’ll be posting updates in here to hold myself accountable! My goal is to come in under an hour, I’m not there yet. I ran Sunday 9/24/17, 5.74 miles in 1:02:42.

Run with me! Whether you’re just starting or you think you’re going to crush me, GOOD, I want you on my team.
