VIRAL: Cop Shoots Groundhog?

***Warning, graphic content***

A cute video of a Maryland State trooper responding to a groundhog in the road turned dark when he shot the animal. The trooper stopped traffic in both directions as the animal slowly made its way across the street.

According to the police statement, the officer used deadly force because he believed the “groundhog to be either sick or injured” and was worried about “public safety.” A real concern would be rabies, which would explain the animal’s bold moves in broad daylight on a busy street.

With such a public display of force, used against an animal that typically is one of the cuter wildlings, many are wondering if this was too much. Where do you stand?
